Lab Testing, Blood Work, DUTCH Hormone Test, Biomarkers & Nutrigenomics

As Functional Medicine focuses on the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms, lab testing is a cornerstone of this approach, providing valuable insights into your body's functions and imbalances. By identifying underlying issues, we can develop personalised and effective treatment plans.  These tests range from blood work or laboratory tests such as for blood glucose, biochemistry, immune function, thyroid levels, lipids and nutritional status to food inflammation tests, allergy, advanced cholesterol tests, gut health, stool tests & GI Maps, DUTCH test and hormone profiling.  We also offer cutting-edge genetic testing and nutrigenomics / metabolics.  These new "longevity" fields are exploring the interaction between your genes and the food you eat, aiming to uncover how your unique genetic makeup influences how your body processes and utilises nutrients.

Our Extensive Lab Testing Service

We offer one of the widest lab test service available.  If you don't see your test or category here or you have a request for a specific test - please get in touch and we will come back to you.  We provide an in-house phlebotomy service for adults at our clinic in Cheshire, for blood tests.  However test kits can also be shipped out for you to use a local phlebotomist, or for tests that can be carried out at home, e.g., blood finger prick, stool, saliva or DNA.  Test results would be provided to ourselves as your healthcare provider via a confidential platform, and we would arrange a consultation with you to discuss.  The whole process usually takes approximately 1-2 weeks, however depends on the chosen tests and consultation availability.  Payment for all tests are required upfront - prices quoted include the test, any shipping, results, analysis reports and a consultation with ourselves for discussion.  Phlebotomy in-clinic incurs an additional cost of £65.

  • Hormones: We offer extensive hormone panels for both men and women, including assessments of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, and more. These tests can help diagnose hormonal imbalances, addressing issues like infertility, mood swings, and low libido.  See also DUTCH testing further below.

  • Nutrients: Nutritional imbalances can affect your overall health. Our tests evaluate your nutrient status, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. We can recommend specific dietary changes and supplements to address deficiencies.  Vitamin and Mineral Levels: Beyond basic nutrients, we can measure specific vitamins and minerals like vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folate. Deficiencies in these micronutrients can have wide-ranging health implications, from fatigue to bone health.

  • Heart Health: Heart disease is a leading cause of death. Our cardiovascular tests assess cholesterol levels, inflammation markers, and other risk factors. This information allows us to design heart-healthy plans.

  • Lipids: We provide comprehensive lipid profiles to assess your cholesterol levels. Identifying abnormalities early can help prevent cardiovascular diseases.  Our lipid tests included advanced cholesterol testing including ApoB.

  • Glucose and Insulin: We offer tests for blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, and HbA1c, crucial for managing or preventing diabetes.

  • Thyroid Function: Thyroid hormones play a vital role in metabolism and overall well-being. Our testing can diagnose conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.  In addition to basic thyroid function tests, we offer thyroid antibody tests to diagnose autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC is a standard blood test that assesses the overall health of your blood. It measures various components, including red and white blood cells, hemoglobin, and platelets. Abnormalities in these values can indicate a wide range of health issues, from anemia to infection.

  • Allergy and Sensitivity Testing: If you suspect food allergies or sensitivities, we offer comprehensive testing to identify specific allergens and sensitivities that may be affecting your health.

  • Inflammation Markers: Chronic inflammation is a significant contributor to many chronic diseases. We offer tests to measure markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) to assess levels of inflammation in the body. Identifying the sources of inflammation is crucial for creating targeted treatment plans.

  • Liver Function: Liver function tests assess the health and functioning of the liver. This includes measurements of enzymes, bilirubin, and albumin levels. These tests help diagnose liver diseases, fatty liver, assess liver damage, and monitor the effects of medications and treatments.

  • Kidney Function: Kidney function tests evaluate how well your kidneys are filtering waste and excess substances from the blood. These tests include creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) measurements. Abnormal results can indicate kidney dysfunction or disease.

  • Autoimmune Markers: For individuals with autoimmune conditions, we offer specific tests to detect antibodies and markers associated with various autoimmune diseases. Early diagnosis and management are crucial in autoimmune conditions.

  • Coagulation Profile: A coagulation profile assesses how well your blood clots. It can be important in diagnosing clotting disorders, monitoring anticoagulant therapy, and evaluating risk factors for thrombosis.

  • Infectious Disease Testing: We provide a wide range of tests to diagnose infectious diseases such as hepatitis, HIV, and Lyme disease. Early detection and management are vital in infectious diseases

  • Bone Health: Bone health markers, including tests for calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH), can assess the risk of osteoporosis and other bone-related issues.

  • Predisposition Testing: We can identify genetic markers associated with your risk of developing various conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and neurodegenerative diseases. Armed with this information, we can help you make informed lifestyle and health choices to mitigate risks.

  • Pharmacogenomics: Genetic testing can reveal how your body metabolises and responds to medications. This information allows for personalised medication selection and dosages, ensuring the most effective and safe treatment options.

  • Carrier Testing: For individuals planning to start a family, carrier testing can assess your risk of passing on genetic disorders to your children. We provide comprehensive carrier screening for various conditions.

  • Nutrigenomics: Your genes can influence how your body processes and utilises nutrients. Nutrigenomic testing can guide dietary and nutritional recommendations based on your unique genetic profile.

MTHFR Gene Testing:

  • One critical aspect of nutrigenomics is testing for the MTHFR gene. MTHFR is an enzyme that plays a key role in the metabolism of folate (a B vitamin), which is essential for DNA synthesis and repair, as well as other important cellular processes.

  • MTHFR Variants: Genetic testing can identify specific variants or mutations in the MTHFR gene. Certain variants can lead to reduced enzyme activity, affecting the body's ability to convert folate into its active form, methylfolate.

  • Implications for Health: MTHFR variants have been associated with various health concerns, including cardiovascular disease, neural tube defects in infants, and conditions related to methylation, which is a fundamental biochemical process in the body.

  • Dietary Adjustments: Knowing your MTHFR status can guide dietary choices and supplementation. Some individuals with MTHFR variants may benefit from methylfolate supplementation, while others may need to be cautious with folic acid intake.

DUTCH Testing: Unraveling Hormone and Cortisol Health

  • DUTCH (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) testing is a powerful diagnostic tool that provides comprehensive insights into hormone and cortisol health.  We offer this advanced testing service to help individuals gain a deeper understanding of their hormonal balance and overall well-being.

  • DUTCH testing is an innovative approach to hormone assessment. Instead of a single blood or saliva sample, it utilises dried urine samples collected over a 24-hour period. This extended collection window offers a more complete picture of your hormone and cortisol levels. Here's what you can expect from DUTCH testing:

  • 1. Hormone Analysis: DUTCH testing covers a wide range of hormones, including sex hormones (estrogens, progesterone, testosterone), adrenal hormones (cortisol and cortisone), and their metabolites. This comprehensive panel allows for in-depth hormone assessment.

  • 2. Diurnal Cortisol: The test includes the measurement of cortisol at multiple time points throughout the day, providing valuable insights into your adrenal function and the body's natural circadian rhythm.

  • 3. Hormone Metabolites: DUTCH testing assesses hormone metabolites, which can reveal how hormones are processed and metabolised in your body. This is crucial for understanding hormone-related conditions and imbalances.

  • 4. Hormone Pathways: The test evaluates the pathways through which hormones are synthesised and metabolised. This can help pinpoint specific areas of hormonal dysfunction.

  • 5. Hormone Balance: DUTCH testing offers a comprehensive view of hormone balance, which is essential for addressing issues like menstrual irregularities, mood swings, fertility problems, menopause, andropause (male menopause) and more.
